While sorting through a box of inherited volumes in his late aunt's cluttered study, Thomas stumbled upon a slim edition of nineteenth-century poetry whose pages had yellowed at the edges. Tucked between two sonnets, almost as if deliberately concealed, lay a small sepia photograph that had clearly been cut to fit the book's dimensions. The image depicted a woman of perhaps thirty-five years standing beside an ornate iron gate, her expression one of quiet amusement rather than the stiff formality typical of the era. What struck Thomas most was the faint pencil notation on the reverse: "Eleanor, before the misunderstanding, 1897."
He had never heard his aunt mention anyone by that name, yet the handwriting bore an unmistakable resemblance to the elegant script his grandmother had used in her correspondence. Intrigued, he spent the remainder of the afternoon cross-referencing family letters, eventually discovering that Eleanor had been his aunt's closest friend until a heated dispute over an undisclosed inheritance in the spring of 1898 had severed their connection permanently.
The photograph, with its carefully preserved edges and hidden placement, suggested that his
aunt had continued to value the memory long after the friendship ended. Thomas wondered
whether the book itself had once belonged to Eleanor; a small bookplate inside the front cover
bore only the initials "E.M." and the date 1896, one year prior to the photograph.
The discovery left him with an odd sense of having intruded upon a private reconciliation that had never quite materialised, and he found himself rereading the sonnets with fresh attention to any veiled references that might hint at regret or lingering affection. By evening, the photograph had been placed carefully between two sheets of acid-free paper, though Thomas could not decide whether to return it to its original hiding place or to frame it as a newly recovered piece of family history.
