By the time the last crates had been stacked on the lorry, the August sun was already sinking behind the hills that surrounded Willowbrook Orchard. Lena had worked there every summer since she turned sixteen, but this would be her final shift. She had accepted a place at university in Edinburgh and knew she would not return next year. The owner, Mr Hargrove, had shaken her hand that morning and told her she would be missed; his wife had even baked a lemon cake for the occasion. Yet the atmosphere felt strangely muted, as if everyone understood that endings were easier when left unspoken. Lena had spent the afternoon picking the last of the late-season apples, her arms aching from the repetitive motion she had grown used to over the previous eight weeks. At half past four she had paused to watch a pair of swallows darting low over the rows, a sight that reminded her of the first day when she had arrived nervous and unsure. Back then she had dropped two full baskets, bruising the fruit and earning a gentle rebuke from the foreman. Now she could fill a crate in under ten minutes without a single mistake. Just before five o'clock the other seasonal workers gathered near the old stone barn. Tomas, who had driven the tractor all summer, produced a bottle of homemade cider he had been saving. They passed plastic cups around while the light turned golden. Lena listened as her colleagues swapped stories about the summer: the day the irrigation pipe burst, the afternoon a tourist had tried to climb the tallest tree, and the morning when hail had threatened the entire crop. She realised she would probably never see most of them again. When the cups were empty, Mr Hargrove appeared carrying the lemon cake. He thanked them all for their hard work and said the orchard had been lucky to have such a dedicated team. Lena felt a sudden tightness in her throat; she had not expected to feel so attached to a temporary job. As she helped load the final boxes onto the lorry at six fifteen, she wondered whether the new students in Edinburgh would ever understand what it meant to stand among the trees at dusk with the scent of ripe fruit in the air. Later, as she cycled home along the familiar lane, Lena glanced back once. The orchard lights had come on, glowing softly against the deepening twilight. She had learned more there than she had realised: patience, the satisfaction of physical labour, and the quiet sadness that arrives when something good reaches its natural close. Tomorrow she would begin packing for university, but tonight the taste of that lemon cake and the memory of shared cider stayed with her all the way home.
