Last month the city council announced plans to update the old public library on Maple Street.
While workers were painting the walls and replacing the windows, the head librarian, Mrs Elena
Vargas, kept the reading room open for visitors. She had already moved most of the books into
temporary storage when the builders arrived. For three weeks people could borrow books only
between ten and two because the main hall was closed.
Yesterday the new computers were finally connected, and several students have already used
them to complete their school projects. Mrs Vargas believes that once the comfortable seating
area is finished, more families will come in the evenings. She hopes the new evening hours will
encourage parents to read with their children after dinner.
During the renovation, volunteers were sorting old magazines when they discovered a collection of maps from 1952. The council has promised to display these maps near the entrance so that everyone can enjoy them. If the project finishes on time, the library will reopen fully next Friday.
Many regular visitors have said they missed the quiet atmosphere, but they understand that the
changes will make the building brighter and more modern. Mrs Vargas is planning a special
event for the reopening where local authors will talk about their latest books. She thinks that if
more young people start visiting regularly, the library could become the heart of the community
again.
