Last Saturday afternoon, while the sun was shining brightly, Mia and her brother Leo were
preparing a small vegetable patch in their back garden. They had never grown vegetables
before, so they felt excited but a little nervous. Mia was digging holes for tomato plants when
Leo suddenly found an old metal box buried under the soil. He was brushing dirt from it when
Mia stopped working and joined him.
Together they opened the box and discovered some old garden tools and a folded note inside.
The note said that the previous owner had planted flower seeds years ago and hoped someone
would continue the work. Since they had already bought young tomato and lettuce plants, they
decided to follow the note's advice and add flowers too.
While they were planting the lettuce, dark clouds appeared and it started to rain heavily. They quickly covered the new plants with plastic sheets they had prepared earlier. By evening the rain had stopped, and the garden looked much better than they expected.
Mia has promised to water the plants every morning before school, and Leo has agreed to check
for insects after football practice. If the weather stays warm next week, they believe the
tomatoes will grow quickly. Their mother was watching from the kitchen window and smiled
because she had worried they would lose interest after one day. Now both children are already
planning what they will plant next spring if this garden succeeds.
